Caucasian Ovcharca is an ancient breed, which has been developed in extremely difficult circumstances. As a Sheepdog the main task was to fight against wild animals such as wolves and bears. During the centuries the breed became tough and strong. The dogs had a large head, heavy coat and they were looking wild and shaggy. Survival in difficult and in quickly changing nature developed different qualities for instance quick moulting.
Caucasian Ovcharca is very suspicious by his nature. He is independent and wants to make his own decisions. He is also a brave, well-balanced and smart dog. It is still a sheepdog. I think that Caucasian Ovcharca is still today quite much that primitive dog that it has earlier been.
With this great character Caucasian Ovcharca demands the consistent, assertive leadership of his owner (master). It is very important to remember his basic nature: he is very independence, mistrustful of strangers and he knows his territory. A breeder has once said very well (in my opinion): "Caucasian Ovcharca will never fulfil commands which he consider stupid or unnecessary.”
We had an experience with our Caucasian Ovcharca Jopan Bobby. Even a bear was not too terrifying. Bobby thought that the bear was on his territory, when the bear was climbing up the rocky hill in the neighbourhood of our house, and he went like an arrow after the bear. Thankfully he was only trying to drive off the bear, in fact he got also some hits from the bear, but managed to come safely home.
The experiences our family has from other breeds, we strongly think, that Caucasian Ovcharca and of course Cora, Ellu, Jori and Luru are the only right dogs for us.
